Brief:
The client, inspired by Tadao Ando’s use of exposed concrete during their time in Japan, sought a minimalist home with a focus on natural materials and subtle warmth.

Task:
The task was to design a house that embodied the client’s aesthetic preferences while addressing practical needs such as efficient use of space and climate-conscious planning. This required blending the minimalist design with the local climate and ensuring a connection between the interiors and the natural surroundings.

Our Response:
We designed the house as a large concrete tray hovering over a white monolith, with the placement of the tray guided by the sun’s movement, providing shade for the west and south-facing walls. The open court on the east side served as the heart and lung of the house, fostering a sense of space and connection to nature. The upper floor plan placed thermal mass elements like bathrooms on the west wall, while the rest of the space opened to the east court. The southern facade was layered with materials of varying perforations and textures, influenced by the sun’s rays, while a leafy monster plant outside contributed to this layering effect. The top-lit main stair allowed natural light to fill the space, creating drama and enhancing the overall atmosphere. The interiors feature an exposed cement finish, teakwood furniture for warmth, and grey granite stone flooring, maintaining the home’s understated, natural aesthetic.

Result:
The house successfully reflected the client’s vision by blending minimalist Japanese design principles with practical climate-responsive elements. The layout maximized natural light and ventilation. The final design not only fulfilled the client’s request for a minimalist and functional home but also created a space that reflected their hobbies and interests.
